Many tube types have a large number of common and not so common names that denote the same tube type/specs or similar specs with subtle changes or optimizations. The classic 12AX7 is a great example of this. You will commonly see 12AX7 with a variety of suffixes such as 12AX7A, 12AX7WA, etc. By and large these tubes are all totally interchangeable. With that in mind here’s a quick chart of common tube types and their counter parts.
- 12AX7, 7025, ECC83, ECC803, E83CC, 6681, CV4004, CV492
- 5751, CV4017. Purpose built low gain 12AX7 substitute. Can be used in any 12AX7 type stage where a slight reduction in gain is desired.
