All of our Marshall 50 Watt full Retube Kits are designed specifically for these amps. Every kit is configured to provide a specific sound/experience.
The default power tubes for all of our Marshall 50 Watt 800 kits are the JJ 6550’s. The JJ 6550 is a high power tube with more headroom than your standard EL34 or 6L6 variant. Compared to the KT88, it breaks up a little earlier and has very raw and open overdriven sound. However you can use the Power Tube drop down to select the JJ KT66’s or the JJ KT88’s. The JJ KT66’s have a clean low end response with a forward mid-range and articulate highs. When overdriven these tubes crunch up early in the upper mids and highs resulting in an incredibly complex tone that retains excellent low end clarity (just like the originals). The JJ KT88’s are a higher power tube with lots of headroom, thunderous lows and thick/aggressive mids. Until you hear a set of KT88’s totally wound out, you haven’t lived!!
These are all adjustable bias amps and all you need to check and adjust the bias is a bias probe and a Multimeter, or our all-in-one Eurotubes “Pro One” bias probe that reads both the plate current and the plate voltage simultaneously. We recommend setting the bias between 38 to 42mA.
The Standard Retube Kit is very close to OEM. The kit includes one matched pair of JJ 6550’s by default, one Balanced JJ ECC83S for the phase inverter (V3, closest to power tubes), and two Standard JJ ECC83S’s for V1 – V2.
The Gold Pin Retube Kit uses the JJ ECC83S Gold Pin variants to provide a smoother, creamier, and more singing overall sound. This option is less aggressive and has less “teeth” when driven hard. If you like a classic raunchy gritty overdriven tone, we recommend looking to the Standard or High Gain option. If sweet, open, and more refined is what you’re after this kit will do it. The kit includes one matched pair of JJ 6550’s by default, one Balanced JJ ECC83S Gold Pin for the phase inverter (V3, closest to power tubes), and two Standard JJ Gold Pin ECC83S’s for V1 – V2.
The High Gain Retube Kit uses our hand picked high gain selected JJ ECC83S’s. If you’re looking for maximum crunch and grind this is where you want to be. Sonically this setup is very similar to our Standard Retube Kit but with a little extra gain on tap. The kit includes one matched pair of JJ 6550’s by default, one Balanced High Gain JJ ECC83S for the phase inverter (V3, closest to power tubes), and two High Gain JJ ECC83S’s for V1 – V2.
The ECC803S V1 Option Retube Kit uses the Long Plate JJ ECC803S in the V1 position. The JJ Long Plate ECC803S has a little lower gain with big thick mids and a little more sparkle in the highs. The kit includes one matched pair of JJ 6550’s by default, one Balanced JJ ECC83S for the phase inverter (V3, farthest from the input jack), one Standard JJ ECC83S for V2 and one Standard JJ ECC803S for V1 (closest to input jack).
