All of our Carr Sportsman full Retube Kits are designed specifically for these amps. Every kit is configured to provide a specific sound/experience.
The default power tubes for all of our Carr Sportsman kits are the Special Double Mica JJ 6V6S-DM’s. The JJ 6V6S-DM’s are the only production 6V6 that can handle very high voltages and they do it with ease. Classic low power 6V6 tones kicked up a notch! Tighter lows, detailed mids and smooth clipping characteristics.
These are cathode bias amps so the power tubes are plug and play.
The Standard Retube Kit is as close to OEM as possible. Maintaining the amps stock level of headroom and gain while providing a warm but even handed overall sound. The kit includes one Matched pair of JJ 6V6S-DM’s, one current Balanced JJ ECC81 for (V4, closest to the power tubes), one JJ Standard ECC81 for V2 and two Standard JJ ECC83S’s for V1 – V3.
The Gold Pin Retube Kit uses the JJ ECC83S Gold Pin variants to provide a smoother, creamier, and more singing overall sound. This option is less aggressive and has less “teeth” when driven hard. If you like a classic raunchy gritty overdriven tone, we recommend looking elsewhere… If sweet, open, and more refined is what you’re after this kit will do it. The kit includes one Matched pair of JJ 6V6S-DM’s, one current Balanced Gold Pin JJ ECC81 for (V4, closest to the power tubes), one Standard JJ Gold Pin ECC81 for V2 and two Standard Gold Pin JJ ECC83S’s for V1 – V3.
The SRV Option Retube Kit It’s no secret that Stevie played his amps cranked and preferred a little cleaner sound from the front end, allowing you to hear more power tube breakup. This kit uses a JJ 5751 for V1 which is in-between an ECC81 and an ECC83S in gain. The kit includes one Matched pair of JJ 6V6S-DM’s, one current Balanced JJ ECC81 for (V4, closest to the power tubes), one JJ Standard ECC83S for V3, one Standard JJ ECC81 for V2 and one Standard JJ 5751 for V1.
The Gold Pin SRV Option Retube Kit For players looking for a smoother creamier tone. This kit uses a Gold pin JJ 5751 for V1 which is in-between an ECC81 and an ECC83S in gain. The kit includes one Matched pair of JJ 6V6S-DM’s, one current Balanced Gold Pin JJ ECC81 for (V4, closest to the power tubes), one JJ Standard Gold Pin ECC83S for V3, one Standard JJ Gold Pin ECC81 for V2 and one Standard Gold Pin JJ 5751 for V1.
The ECC803S V1 Option Retube Kit uses the Long Plate JJ ECC803S in the V1 position. The JJ Long Plate ECC803S has a little lower gain with big thick mids and a little more sparkle in the highs. The kit includes one Matched pair of JJ 6V6S-DM’s, one current Balanced JJ ECC81 for (V4, closest to the power tubes), one JJ Standard ECC83S for V3, one Standard JJ ECC81 for V2 and one Standard Long Plate JJ ECC803S for V1.
