The Mesa Boogie 400 Retube Kits.
All of our Mesa Boogie 400 full Retube Kits are designed specifically for these amps. Every kit is configured to provide a specific sound/experience.
The default power tubes for all of our Mesa Boogie 400 kits are the JJ 6L6GC’s. These tubes follow the classic 6L6GC sonic archetype with big lows, smooth mids and crystalline highs. What sets them apart is their low end clarity, mid-range detail and very clear highs without being overbearing or harsh. Other tube options are the JJ 6550’s and the JJ KT88’s. The JJ KT88’s are a higher power tube with lots of headroom, thunderous lows and thick/aggressive mids. However you can use the dropdown to select the JJ 6550’s. The JJ 6550 is a high power tube with more headroom than your standard EL34 or 6L6 variant. Compared to the KT88, it breaks up a little earlier and has very raw and open overdriven sound.
These amps are fixed bias with no adjustment. The 6L6GC’s, 6550’s and KT88’s are all plug and play with no mods or biasing necessary.
The Standard Retube Kit is very close to OEM. The kit includes one matched sextet of JJ 6L6GC’s by default, two Balanced and Matched JJ ECC83S’s for the phase inverters and driver in V3 – V4 which are the two preamp tubes farthest from the input jacks, and two Standard JJ ECC83S’s for V1 – V2.
The High Gain Retube Kit uses our hand picked high gain selected JJ ECC83S’s. If you’re looking for maximum punch and growl this is where you want to be. Sonically this setup is very similar to our Standard Retube Kit but with a little extra gain on tap. The kit includes one matched sextet of JJ 6L6GC’s by default, two Balanced and Matched JJ ECC83S’s for the phase inverters and driver in V3 – V4 which are the two preamp tubes farthest from the input jacks, and two Standard Handpicked High Gain JJ ECC83S’s for V1 – V2.
The ECC803S Option Retube Kit uses the Long Plate JJ ECC803S in the Preamp section. The JJ Long Plate ECC803S has a little lower gain with big thick mids and a little more sparkle in the highs. The kit includes one matched sextet of JJ 6L6GC’s by default, two Balanced and Matched JJ ECC83S’s for the phase inverters and driver in V3 – V4 which are the two preamp tubes farthest from the input jacks, and two Standard Long Plate JJ ECC803S’s for V1 – V2.
