The Crate Blue VooDoo 300 Retube Kits. All of our Crate Blue VooDoo 300 full Retube Kits are designed specifically for these amps. Every kit is configured to provide a specific sound/experience.
The default power tubes for all of our Crate Blue VooDoo 300 kits are the JJ 6550’s. The JJ 6550 is a high power tube with more headroom than your standard EL34 or 6L6 variant. Compared to the KT88, it breaks up a little earlier and has very raw and open overdriven sound. The sockets in the BV300 are only two inches apart so we don’t recommend using KT88’s. They will physically fit but the distance between the tubes is so slight they will not cool properly.
These are all adjustable bias amps and all you need to check and adjust the bias is a multimeter because there are test points on the amp. Or you can use a bias probe and a Multimeter, or our all-in-one Eurotubes “Pro One” bias probe that reads both the plate current and the plate voltage simultaneously.
The Standard Retube Kit is very close to OEM. The kit includes one matched quad of JJ 6550’s by default, two Balanced JJ ECC82’s for the phase inverters (V9 – V10, closest to the power tubes), and eight Standard JJ ECC83S’s for V1 thru V8.
The Gold Pin Retube Kit uses the JJ ECC83S Gold Pin variants to provide a smoother, creamier, and more singing overall sound. This option is less aggressive and has less “teeth” when driven hard. If you like a classic raunchy gritty overdriven tone, we recommend looking to the Standard or High Gain option. If sweet, open, and more refined is what you’re after this kit will do it. The kit includes one matched quad of JJ 6550’s by default, two Balanced Gold Pin JJ ECC82’s for the phase inverters (V9 – V10, closest to the power tubes), and eight Standard JJ Gold Pin ECC83S’s for V1 thru V8.
The High Gain Retube Kit uses our hand picked high gain selected JJ ECC83S’s. If you’re looking for maximum crunch and grind this is where you want to be. Sonically this setup is very similar to our Standard Retube Kit but with a little extra gain on tap. The kit includes one matched quad of JJ 6550’s by default, two Balanced JJ ECC82’s for the phase inverters (V9 – V10, closest to the power tubes), and eight Handpicked High Gain JJ ECC83S’s for V1 thru V8.
The ECC803S V1 Option Retube Kit uses the Long Plate JJ ECC803S in the V1 position. The JJ Long Plate ECC803S has a little lower gain with big thick mids and a little more sparkle in the highs. The kit includes one matched quad of JJ 6550’s by default, two Balanced JJ ECC82’s for the phase inverters (V9 – V10, closest to the power tubes), seven Standard JJ ECC83S’s for V2 thru V8 and one Standard JJ ECC803S for V1 (closest to input jack).
The Gold Pin ECC803S V1 Retube Kit uses the Gold Pin tubes for a smoother richer tone. The kit includes one matched quad of JJ 6550’s by default, two Balanced Gold Pin JJ ECC82’s for the phase inverters (V9 – V10, closest to the power tubes), seven Standard Gold Pin JJ ECC83S’s for V2 thru V8 and one Standard Long Plate Gold Pin JJ ECC803S for V1 (closest to input jack).
